Immune system - A miracle of nature

What nourishes and what threatens our homeostasis?

The common view that our immune system essentially distinguishes FREME from OWN does not correspond to the state of modern research. Especially in recent years, a change in the way we look at the immune system has allowed us to appreciate its fullness and power. Of course, we must not forget that invaders hostile to us, unfavorable to us, and potentially lethal to us, also exist in our immediate environment (i.e., the air that surrounds us and that we breathe, the water we drink, the clothing we wear, the food we ingest, etc.) and attempt to penetrate our external barriers. However, well over 99% of these invaders are continually repelled by our microbiome at the orifices of our bodies as well as our outer skin and inner barriers. The microbiome is that part of us that regulates who or what is allowed into our bodies in the form of a protective film on our mucous membranes and in the mucus itself that is invisible to us.

Our immune system is able to communicate continuously in conjunction with all the other systems of our body, mind and immediate environment, figuring out what behaviors, nutrition, activities down to the smallest structures are nourishing us or have the potential to harm us.

We explain its structural design without getting lost in medical details. After that, we turn practically to what we can supportively and actively contribute from a yoga-therapeutic point of view.
